Not all concrete is the same. In addition to the inherent differences in composition amongst concretes, specific additives and particles can also significantly alter the qualities of any given concrete.

For instance, concrete and rolled concrete have entirely distinct qualities, and the physical characteristics of lightweight and heavy concrete are fundamentally different.
All concretes do, however, have a few characteristics.

Because it can be tailored to an individual’s specifications, concrete is a very popular building material. Nonetheless, all concretes already have several excellent fundamental qualities:
- Compared to other building materials, concrete has a very high compressive strength.
- Resistance to corrosion (concrete is incredibly durable)
- Resistance to surface wear; for some concretes, such as spun concrete, this is practical “indestructibility”
- Good fire resistance qualities in concrete
- Resistance to high temperatures
- increased resistance to chemicals
- Any surface design and formability
- Moist resistance and water impermeability (as well as most of the others)
Concrete is a superb and nearly “universal” building material just based on these qualities. Additionally, the qualities of concrete can be precisely tailored to a particular use by varying its composition and adding a wide range of additives.
Concrete composite materials are particularly intriguing:
- Concrete reinforced with fiber
- Wooden concrete
- Components made of reinforced concrete
As in the case of fiber concrete or reinforced concrete, they give concrete entirely new, extra properties and can even help to strengthen numerous weak spots that concrete has as a building material (for example, low resistance to tensile pressures or brittleness).

There are efforts to make concrete less cemented and, consequently, much more sustainable and environmentally friendly due to the significant negative effects of cement manufacture on the environment, which emits large amounts of carbon dioxide and occasionally pollutes the environment with harmful compounds.
In the future, concrete will transform from a universal building material into an eco-building material with exceptional endurance if it can withstand substantially less cement while maintaining the same strength. Although there is already an eco-concrete alternative to wood concrete, it hasn’t been applied to any construction projects yet.
