Proper removal of residual cement

Properly remove cement residue with BETOFF-B liquid! No matter how carefully you work when installing tiles or ceramic or natural stone, you can almost always find a gray haze. It needs to be removed, but in the case of natural stone, you need to be especially careful with your choice of means. Our guide will show you the best methods for removing cement residue and the right cleaners.

Proper cement residue removal. How do cement stains form?

Most ceramic tiles or natural stone slabs are laid side by side. The resulting joints are filled with a cement-based material (grout). Once it dries, it is difficult to remove with ordinary water; a specialized cleaner must be used.

Proper removal of cement residues. After filling the joints with grouting compound.

When grouting, professionals always wipe the grout with clean water, but even the smallest amount of mortar spreads over the surface of the stone. When the stone dries completely and the mortar hardens, thin veils of cement are often visible running across the surface of the stone.

These cement residues should be removed during the final tile cleaning. In addition, efflorescence can occur for other reasons, and rust stains can become visible when the stone material reacts with a particular mortar. These can be, for example, whitish efflorescence on paving stones, but also stains of a different color that only become visible after the cementitious materials have hardened. Often, they are not considered structural or installation defects – your duty is then to remove the residual mortar or remove the efflorescence. Sometimes, unsightly stains are simply stone deposits.

How to get rid of cement residues?

In the case of natural stone, it is especially important to be careful when choosing how to remove the cement layer. Since each type of stone has its specific requirements and “weak points,” it is not possible to simply remove the mortar residue from stones with any means.

Plain water is the first measure that should always be used to remove cement residue. Although it is not always possible to remove the cement residue completely, this method often allows you to remove part of it. In any case, it creates a good foundation. It is recommended to use water as warm as possible for wiping.

When lying, if you do it yourself, you should use plenty of water. Mortar spilled on the stones should always be wiped off immediately with plenty of water. This saves you from removing a considerable amount of later cement veils. Unfortunately, cleaning must be very thorough because even the smallest amount of cement creates an ugly cement haze.

However, removal of the true cement layer is allowed only after the joint has completely hardened and become resilient. Otherwise, there is a risk that the joint will be washed out or damaged, which may later affect its function. Pay attention to this.

Proper removal of residual cement. What liquids are suitable for removing dried cement?

If you want to remove cement residue yourself, you should use a special cleaner that is designed for this type of dirt. Alternatively, you can first use a basic cleaner designed for a specific type of stone to remove mortar residue.

Either way, an acid-free, alkaline cleaner such as BETOFF-B, which requires little effort, is essential. Light cement residues can usually be effectively removed in just a few minutes.

After use, wash off the liquid and dissolve the cement thoroughly with water and check the effect. If you remove only part of the cement layer, the whole process can be carried out from scratch.

ATTENTION! ALWAYS CARRY OUT A SMALL TEST BEFORE USING THE PRODUCT ON A LARGE AREA! YOU MAY FIND THAT BETOFF-B LIQUID NEEDS TO BE DILUTED WITH WATER!

In case of stubborn or particularly pronounced cement residues, it is recommended to immediately use a special cement residue remover suitable for the type of stone. Note that with some products, the stone and grout may need to be wetted first, and only a diluted product solution can be used initially. Always carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions so as not to damage the stone – even cement residue removal products designed for particular stones can be extremely aggressive and require special care.
